京都府産の花崗岩、鞍馬石

鞍馬石は全国的な知名度を誇る京都の銘石です。加茂七石の一つとして京都の庭園文化に深く根付いている石材です。鞍馬から産出する本鞍馬石、丹波地方より産出する丹波鞍馬石、山梨県産の甲州鞍馬石に大別され、ISHIMOでは本鞍馬石を使用しています。硬質で濃い茶褐色の落ち着いた色合いと、ゴツゴツした石肌が特徴です。内部は白っぽい色をしていますが、表面は石に含まれる鉄分が酸化して鉄錆色に変化します。古くから日本の庭園に使われる石材で、わびさびを表現するのに重要な役割を果たしてきました。主には自然石の形のまま沓脱石・飛び石に使用したり、加工を施して手水鉢・記念碑などに使われます。

台石には兵庫県産竜山石を使用

Kurama Stone, Granite from Kyoto Prefecture

Kurama stone is a renowned Kyoto stone with nationwide recognition. As one of the seven Kamo stones, it is a stone deeply rooted in Kyoto's garden culture. Kurama stone is broadly classified into three types: Hon-Kurama stone (produced in Kurama), Tanba-Kurama stone (produced in the Tanba region), and Koshu-Kurama stone (produced in Yamanashi Prefecture). ISHIMO uses Hon-Kurama stone. It is characterized by its hard, deep reddish-brown color and rough texture. While the interior is whitish, the surface changes to a rusty color due to the oxidation of iron contained in the stone. It has been used in Japanese gardens since ancient times, playing an important role in expressing wabi-sabi (a Japanese aesthetic concept emphasizing simplicity and transience). It is mainly used as stepping stones and other stones in their natural form, or processed for use in water basins and monuments.

The base stone uses Ryuzan stone from Hyogo Prefecture

Ryuzan stone is characterized by its soft, pale blue and yellow colors. It is produced in Takasago City, Hyogo Prefecture. It has a history of quarrying dating back 1700 years and has been used for various purposes and in different situations throughout history. During the Kofun period, it was favored as a stone sarcophagus for kings and powerful clans. Later, it was used in stone art such as five-ring stupas and stone Buddha statues, and widely used as a structural material in buildings like Himeji Castle and Akashi Castle's rock walls. Even in modern architecture, it's used in the Imperial Palace's Fukiage Garden, the National Diet Building, the Sumitomo Bank Head Office Building, and many temples and shrines. 福岡県八女市の黒い凝灰岩、八女石を使った、手彫りのお地蔵さま。石の特質を深く知る、地元の職人による彫刻です。力強さと穏やかさを兼ね備えた、希少な黒色のお地蔵さまです。

石茂が特別にオーダーした、黒いお地蔵さま

石茂は2023年、福岡県八女市の職人さんと新たにつながりを作りました。地元で彫刻されている職人さんに、特別にお地蔵さまを作っていただきました。人々に愛されるお地蔵さまを製作するために、数回の試作を重ね、優しく、温かい表情を持つお地蔵さまが出来上がりました。

手掛けたのは、福岡県八女市の石職人。地元で代々石灯籠を彫刻している職人さんにお地蔵さんの製作をお願いしました。実際に八女石の採石も行っており、石の特徴を長年知っている職人さんです。地元の石工だからこそ、八女石の良さを最大限に生かした作品に仕上がりました。

阿蘇山の火山灰から出来た、八女石を使用

八女石は、福岡県八女市で産出される、凝灰岩です。7万年前の阿蘇山の大噴火により、火山灰が固まった堆積物です。黄色の小さな軽石や、黒曜岩が混ざっているのが特徴です。軟らかい石質をもつ八女石は、彫刻にも使用され、また屋外に置くと、苔が付きやすいという特徴があります。多孔質なため、小さな穴が表面にたくさん開いています。そのため、軽く、耐火性、耐寒性にも優れています。

Yame stone: Formed from Aso Volcanic Ash

Yame stone is a tuff produced in Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It originated from the massive eruption of Mount Aso around 70,000 years ago, where volcanic ash solidified into sediment. Notable features include small yellow pumice stones and the presence of obsidian. Yame stone is soft, suitable for carving, and when placed outdoors, it tends to gather moss. Its porous nature results in numerous small holes on the surface, making it lightweight, fire-resistant, and cold-resistant.

恵比寿（えびす）は、日本で広く信仰されている「七福神（しちふくじん）」の一柱です。七福神とは、幸福や金運、長寿などさまざまな福をもたらすとされる七柱の神々の総称で、人々の暮らしに豊かさと安心を授ける存在として親しまれています。その中で恵比寿は、特に「商いの成功」や「実りある成果」をもたらす神として知られています。鯛を抱え、釣り竿を手にした姿は「福を釣り上げる」ことを意味し、努力が実を結ぶことや、良い機会を引き寄せる象徴とされています。にこやかで親しみやすい表情は、人との縁や円満な関係を育み、穏やかな繁栄へと導く存在として大切にされています。約20cmの程よい大きさは、室内のインテリアとしても、庭先や屋外の景観の一部としても自然に馴染みます。日々の暮らしの中にさりげなく溶け込みながら、福と実りを招く存在として長く親しんでいただける一体です。

愛知県産の白系御影石の代表格「花沢石（はなざわいし）」を使用。愛知県豊田市花沢町にある、三河三霊山の一つ、六所山から産出されます。明治20年頃から採掘され、愛知県では昔から墓石材・彫刻材として親しまれています。花沢石の特徴は、石質の“粘り”の強さ。石質が柔らかく、粘りが強いことから、彫刻に最適な石材です。きめ細やかで、低吸水率で高く、耐久性があります。墓石材のほか、石仏などの彫刻物にも多く用いられています。

Hanazawa Stone from Aichi Prefecture: Ideal for Stone Sculpture

This piece uses Hanazawa stone, a representative white granite from Aichi Prefecture. It is quarried from Mt. Rokusho, one of the three sacred mountains of Mikawa, located in Hanazawa-cho, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. Mined since around 1887, it has long been a popular material for tombstones and sculptures in Aichi Prefecture. A key characteristic of Hanazawa stone is its strong "toughness." Its soft yet tough texture makes it ideal for sculpture. It is fine-grained, has a low water absorption rate, and is highly durable. Besides tombstones, it is also widely used for sculptures such as Buddhist statues.

A hand-carved work by a stonemason from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture

The sculpture was created by a stonemason from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. Okazaki City is known as one of Japan's three major stone-producing areas and is famous for having many stonemasons with top-notch skills. Among them, we had this piece specially made by a craftsman who has supplied stone Buddha statues to numerous temples.
