現世利益(この世での幸せ)を授ける菩薩として、広く信仰を集める聖観音菩薩。人々の願いに寄り添うそのお姿は、慈悲と救いの象徴とされています。 観音菩薩は願いに応じて、その姿を三十三にも変化させ、救いの手を差し伸べると言われています。この変化の様子を仏像で表したため、多様な観音菩薩がつくられるようになりました。この石仏は「聖観音菩薩」と呼ばれる、顔が一つ、腕と足が2本ずつの、変化の基本となるお姿です。 船の形状をした飾りのある、「舟形」と呼ばれるかたちです。背中の光背も、丁寧に彫り込んでいます。また、仏像と同じ真壁石で、台石もあつらえました。五輪塔の中台にも用いられる、蓮華の反花(かえりばな)の装飾を施しています。 彫刻を手がけたのは、茨城県で活躍する、伝統工芸士。石仏や石灯籠の彫刻に長けた地元の職人が、一つ一つ手彫りで仕上げました。真壁石は、コブ出し、ビシャン、小叩きといった、磨かない加工の方が、石本来の魅力がでると言われています。こちらの彫刻品も細やかなビシャンを施し、自然石の趣を表現しました。

国産みかげ石の代表格、茨城県産真壁石を使用

真壁石は、茨城県桜井市真壁地区で採石される花崗岩です。この一帯は古くから良質な花崗岩の産地として知られ、明治までは「常陸小みかげ」と呼ばれていました。赤坂離宮にも使用されている石材で、関東地区を中心に、国産みかげの代表として知られています。青みを帯びた優しい色目が特徴で、経年により青みが一層増してきます。風化しにくいながらも、使うほどに味が出てくるのが、真壁石の魅力です。吸水率は低くはありませんが、水はけが良く、美しい石目が長年お楽しみいただけます。

The Sho-Kannon Bodhisattva is widely revered as a deity who bestows Gense-riyaku (worldly benefits and happiness). With a serene presence that stays close to people’s prayers, this figure stands as a timeless symbol of compassion and salvation. It is said that Kannon Bodhisattva can transform into thirty-three different forms to extend a helping hand to those in need. While this has led to the creation of diverse Kannon statues, this particular stone sculpture represents the "Sho-Kannon"—the fundamental form with one face, two arms, and two legs.

Exquisite Craftsmanship in Stone

This statue features a "Funagata" (boat-shaped) design, including a meticulously carved halo (kohai) on the back. It rests upon a custom-made pedestal crafted from the same Makabe stone as the Buddha statue itself. The pedestal is adorned with Kaeribana (inverted lotus petals), a traditional decorative motif also found on the central sections of Gorinto pagodas.

Granite, Kurama stone from Kyoto Prefecture

Kurama stone is a famous stone of Kyoto that is known nationwide. This stone is one of the seven stones of Kamo, and is deeply rooted in Kyoto's garden culture. It can be broadly divided into genuine Kurama stones produced from Kurama, Tanba Kurama stones produced from the Tamba region, and Koshu Kurama stones produced from Yamanashi Prefecture, and ISHIMO uses genuine Kurama stones. It is characterized by its hard, dark brownish, calm shade and rough stone finish. Daruma dolls have long been beloved in Japan as lucky charms, symbolizing the spirit of "fall seven times, get up eight." Their roots lie in Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. The image of daruma dolls, characterized by their long training and indomitable spirit, spread throughout Japan and evolved into the lucky charms they are today. Hand-carved by artisans

We use Okazaki Stone (Oro-aoishi), sourced from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. This high-quality granite, known as "Sanshu Mikage," is hard and has been widely used for sculptures and lanterns. It is a representative stone material of Okazaki.

石彫刻に最適な愛知県産の花沢石

愛知県産の白系御影石の代表格「花沢石（はなざわいし）」を使用。愛知県豊田市花沢町にある、三河三霊山の一つ、六所山から産出されます。明治20年頃から採掘され、愛知県では昔から墓石材・彫刻材として親しまれています。 花沢石の特徴は、石質の“粘り”の強さ。石質が柔らかく、粘りが強いことから、彫刻に最適な石材です。きめ細やかで、低吸水率で高く、耐久性があります。墓石材のほか、石仏などの彫刻物にも多く用いられています。

Hand-Carved Artwork by Aichi Prefecture's Stone Craftsman

Jizo was crafted by a stone artisan from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. Okazaki City is well-known as one of Japan's three major stone-producing areas, with many skilled stone craftsmen. This particular Jizo statue was specially created by a craftsman who has contributed numerous stone Buddhas to temples in the area. Craftsman's Message: "We have the privilege of creating objects of your prayers. May what you perceive as the final warm light be with you..." It is with such feelings that we create our works.

Optimal Aichi Prefecture Hanazawa Stone for Stone Sculpture

Hanazawa stone, a representative of Aichi Prefecture's white granite. Quarried from Mt. Rokusho in Hanazawa-cho, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, it has been mined since the Meiji era and has been cherished in Aichi as a material for gravestones and sculptures. The characteristic of Hanazawa stone is its strong "adhesive" quality, making it ideal for stone carving. It has fine grains, low water absorption, and high durability. It is widely used not only for gravestones but also for carved sculptures like stone Buddhas.

Uses Shiro Stone That Is No Longer Mined The stone used for this lantern is shiro stone from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is a rare granite called "both-mica granite" containing both white and black mica. Previously, it was commonly used for lanterns and other stone sculptures due to its low cost and high quality, but it can no longer be mined. Its relatively soft texture and moss-friendly properties are also popular features.
