Using the Representative Ibaraki Stone, Domestically Produced Granite

Makabe stone is a granite mined in the Makabe area of Sakuragawa City, Ibaraki Prefecture. It is a stone material used even in the Akasaka Palace and is known as a representative of domestically produced Mikage stones, primarily in the Kanto region. One of the characteristics of Mikage stone is its minimal discoloration over the years. Although it has a moderate water absorption rate, it has good drainage, allowing you to enjoy its beautiful stone grain for many years. While it doesn't remain completely unchanged, its dignified appearance increases over time, and its charm deepens with use, which is also the appeal of Mikage stone.

An Exquisite Hand-Carved Piece by Traditional Craftsmen

The carving was done by traditional craftsmen active in Ibaraki Prefecture. Local artisans skilled in carving stone Buddhas and stone lanterns meticulously finished each piece by hand. Makabe stone is said to best reveal its natural charm through processes such as cobbling, bishan, and small pounding, rather than polishing. These carvings also feature delicate bishan, giving them a natural stone-like finish that harmonizes well with Japanese-style gardens.
