ABOUT ISHIMO

石茂 (ISHIMO)のはじまりは、江戸時代享保年間(1728年頃)。
初代・芳村 茂右衛門（もえもん）が京都の北白川で創業しました。
北白川は、京都市左京区、銀閣寺のあたりに位置する地域。
当時は良質な花崗岩が産出されることより、石工の村として栄えていました。
非常に腕の立つ石工（いしく）であった茂右衛門は、石工集団を形成。
「石茂」という屋号の下、灯篭や狛犬など、さまざまな石造美術品を手掛けてきました。
その名は、京都を中心に社寺仏閣の石造美術品に刻まれ、現在も受け継がれています。

天保元年（1830年）、石茂は現在の堀川椹木町へと移ります。
今でも本店前に流れる、堀川の水流を活かして、石を運んでいたと言います。
時代の変遷に伴い、彫刻品から社寺、数寄屋建築における石工事を担うようになります。
これまで、清水寺や金閣寺、平安神宮など、数多くの社寺仏閣の石工事に携わってきました。

私たちは建築のほか、『石のある暮らし』を提案するため、商品開発も行います。
日本には各地に石の産地があり、その土地で育まれた高い技術をもつ職人がいます。
その素材や加工の素晴らしさを最大限に活かした、石の商品をつくることを目指します。
 
石茂 (ISHIMO)の使命は、日本の石文化を人々に伝え、未来につなげること。
一つひとつの石と真摯に向き合い、人々のこころをより豊かにできる存在であり続けます。

About ISHIMO

Ishimo (ISHIMO) was established during the Kyoho era of the Edo period by Yoshimura Moemon, a pioneering stonemason in Kitashirakawa, Kyoto. Nestled near the Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji temple), Kitashirakawa thrived as a hub for skilled stonemasons, due to its abundant high-quality granite resources. Moemon, renowned for his craftsmanship, assembled a group of artisans under the banner of "Ishimo," dedicated to creating intricate stone artworks such as lanterns and guardian dogss.
 
Around the first year of Tenpo (1830), Ishimo relocated to the current Horikawa Marutamachi area. This move leveraged the Horikawa River's current for transporting stones, marking a pivotal moment our growth. Adapting to the changing times, Ishimo expanded its expertise to encompass sculptural stonemasonry for shrines, temples, and traditional tea-ceremony architectures.
 
Throughout its history, Ishimo has contributed to stonemasonry across Kyoto, and pieces can be found in iconic landmarks including Kiyomizu Temple, the Golden Pavilion, and Heian Jingu. Beyond architectural endeavors, our commitment extends to product innovation, promoting "A Life with Stone." Japan has various stone-producing regions with master artisans, which create impressive stone products that epitomize material excellence and traditional craftsmanship.
