Made from Hanazawa Stone, Sourced in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture
Aichi Prefecture's Okazaki City is renowned as one of Japan's three major stone-producing regions. Hanazawa stone, a granite quarried in Okazaki, has been widely used in stone sculptures such as Buddhist statues and lanterns. It is a prestigious stone, even employed in the crafting of important statues like the Great Sun Buddha at Mii Temple (Shiga Prefecture) and the seated image of Dengyo Daishi at Mount Hiei's Enryaku-ji Temple (Shiga Prefecture).
Hand-Carved by A Local Artisan
The distinctive feature of the Smiling Jizo is the meticulous hand-carving. Skilled craftsmen, well-versed in the characteristics of Hanazawa stone, create each piece with care. With unique facial expressions, each Jizo is subtly different due to the individual hand-carving process. (This product is on the left side in the photos)
Words from the Artisan
Buddhas are a "mirror reflecting our hearts." When viewed with a troubled mind, the Buddha may appear with a stern expression, but seen with a gentle heart, it returns a smiling face. This Jizo statue was intentionally crafted with a smiling appearance, wishing for the continuous growth of a compassionate heart within all of us.
Another Jizo carved by the same artisan using Hanazawa stone is also available.
Smiling Hand-Carved Jizo (Natural Stone Base)/Hanazawa Stone
This product is on the left side, standing on a circular pedestal, and is slightly shorter than the other Jizo. Please choose the Jizo statue that suits your preference in expression and size.
