安土桃山時代に岡崎城の建設に伴い、愛知県岡崎市に移り住んだ石工たちが、石工村を作りました。彼らの加工技術は、現在にまで引き継がれ、昭和54年8月に経済産業省より、伝統的工芸品の指定を受けました。指定された品目は、大きく分けて9品目あり、雪見灯篭もそのひとつ。優れた素材と高い技術力を認められた岡崎石工品として、この丸雪見灯篭も認定されています。
今では採掘できない、白石を使用
こちらの灯篭に使用しているのは、愛知県岡崎市産の白石（しろいし）。白雲母と黒雲母の両方をもつ、「両雲母花崗岩」という珍しい花崗岩です。安価で品質が良い石なので、以前は灯篭などの石彫刻品に多く使われてきましたが、現在では採石できません。比較的柔らかい石質で、苔が付きやすいのも人気のポイント。こちらの商品は、30年程前に彫刻されてから、十数年程は屋内にて保管されていたので、今でも地元に残る白石の彫刻品に比べて、状態が非常に良い作品。

製作したのは、岡崎市で活躍した伝統工芸士。残念ながら、作り手はすでに他界しておられますが、ご家族から特別に頂きました。話を聞くと、作り手が最も腕が優れた時期に作り上げた作品だそう。笠から足元まで、一つ一つ非常に緻密に彫刻されていて、見る人を飽きさせない魅力があります。もう同じものは製作できない、特別な逸品です。

A beautifully decorated snow viewing stone lantern (Yukimi in Japanese) crafted by an Okazaki traditional craftsman about 30 years ago. Designated as an Okazaki stone craft, it uses shiro stone that can no longer be quarried. It is in excellent condition, with intricate craftsmanship, making it a special and unique piece.
Designated Okazaki Stone Craft Round Snow Viewing Lantern
During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, stonemasons who moved to Okazaki City in Aichi Prefecture for the construction of Okazaki Castle established a stonemason village. Their crafting techniques have been passed down to the present day, and in August 1979, they were designated as traditional crafts by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. There are nine major items designated, including the Yukimi Lantern. Recognized for its excellent materials and high technical skills, this snow viewing lantern is also certified as an Okazaki stone craft.
Uses Shiro Stone That Is No Longer Mined
The stone used for this lantern is shiro stone from Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. It is a rare granite called "both-mica granite" containing both white and black mica. Previously, it was commonly used for lanterns and other stone sculptures due to its low cost and high quality, but it can no longer be mined. Its relatively soft texture and moss-friendly properties are also popular features. This product was sculpted about 30 years ago and stored indoors for over a decade, so it is in much better condition compared to other local white stone sculptures.
Last Work by a Traditional Craftsman from Okazaki
This lantern was created by a traditional craftsman active in Okazaki City. Unfortunately, the creator has since passed away, but the piece was specially obtained from his family. According to them, it was crafted during the most skilled period of the craftsman’s career. Each part, from the umbrella to the legs, is intricately carved, providing an enduring charm to viewers. This unique piece can no longer be replicated.
