Japanese Komainu Culture

Komainu, the guardian lion-dogs seated at the approach and in front of the main hall of Shinto shrines, play a role in warding off evil spirits and calamities. Beyond their role as protectors, these mythical creatures symbolize the safeguarding of people's lives and happiness through their presence in daily life.

The Origin of Kyoto's "Ishimo-style Komainu"

Among the various styles of Komainu, the Ishimo-style Komainu is a design associated with Kyoto, crafted by the renowned third-generation stonemason Shigemura Mouriemon. Noteworthy features of the Ishimo style include powerful legs, expressive faces, and tails adorned with dynamic swirls. These sculptures, bearing the name of the artisan "Ishikou Mouriemon," can be found in revered locations such as Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, Shikichi Shrine, Kamigoryo Shrine, and Shimagoryo Shrine.

Detail-Oriented 15cm Ishimo-Style Komainu

We have meticulously carved the traditional Ishimo-style Komainu into a compact 15cm size. Whether placed in your home or business, these guardian spirits can protect your cherished spaces from misfortune. Embrace Japanese stone culture in your daily life and enhance your surroundings. Limited to 10 pairs, we offer these sculptures at an affordable price, with attention given to details such as fur texture and facial expressions.

Suitable for Indoor and Outdoor Use

Crafted from white Omiyageishi stone, these sculptures are suitable for outdoor placement. With a weight of approximately 2.3kg each, they can be easily moved. The small size makes them versatile for placement at entrances, on either side of doors, in the inauspicious directions, at household Shinto altars, and more. Ideal for housewarmings, grand openings, or as thoughtful gifts for family and loved ones.

Product Details

Size: Height 15cm, Width 14cm, Depth 8.4cm
Weight: Single - 2.35kg, Pair - 4.7kg

Handling Instructions

- Komainu serves as a guardian against misfortune, evil, and as a protector spirit. Keep it well-maintained.
- For dust and light dirt, a wrung-out cloth can be used for easy cleaning. In case of spills, especially acidic or oily substances, prompt wiping is recommended to prevent stains.
- Avoid placing them in unstable or high-risk areas, within reach of children. Falling from a height may cause damage to the stone, furniture, or pose a risk of injury. Exercise caution.
- Do not use abrasive materials or brushes. Harsh cleaning may lead to damage to the finely carved details.

Custom-Made Production

For those desiring larger Komainu or seeking a unique design, we offer custom-made options. Our skilled artisans, traditional craftsmen, will hand-carve each piece according to your vision. The production process takes approximately 2 to 3 months.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if you wish to place a custom order.
