A pair of foxes, each carrying a scroll and a jewel.

These stone statues bring the fox, a symbol of Inari worship long cherished, closer to your everyday life. The substantial feel and rustic texture unique to stone blend well with Japanese gardens, courtyards, entrances, and gates. Displaying them as a pair creates a dignified atmosphere and a sacred feel.

Foxes: Symbols of Japanese Inari Faith

Foxes have long been revered as messengers (attendants) of Inari Okami (the Inari deity). Inari faith originally centered on prayers for abundant harvests and agriculture, and over time, it spread throughout Japan, becoming associated with various wishes related to daily life, such as business prosperity, family safety, and good fortune. Foxes enshrined in shrine grounds are widely known as symbols of Inari faith.

The meticulously crafted fox sculptures

Utilizing soft curves, the sculptures express the gentle and graceful form of the foxes. Every detail, from the rounded body lines to the facial expressions, has been carefully carved. The fox on the left holds a scroll, while the fox on the right holds a jewel. While there are various theories, the scroll is said to symbolize wisdom, learning, and knowledge, while the jewel (or jewel) is said to represent spiritual power, wealth, and the fulfillment of wishes.

Using the Representative Ibaraki Stone, Domestically Produced Granite

Makabe stone is granite quarried in the Makabe district of Sakurai City, Ibaraki Prefecture. This area has long been known as a source of high-quality granite, and was known as "Hitachi Ko Mikage" until the Meiji period. It is the stone material used in Akasaka Imperial Villa, and is known as a representative of domestically produced Mikage, especially in the Kanto region. It is characterized by a gentle bluish color that deepens with age. The appeal of Makabe stone is that it is resistant to weathering, but develops a unique character the more it is used. Although it does not absorb water easily, it has good drainage and the beautiful stone grain can be enjoyed for many years.

With a height of approximately 20 cm, it's an easy size to incorporate into your home, making it ideal not only for gardens but also as interior decor for your home's entrance or altar, or for creating a Japanese-style atmosphere in shops and other establishments.
