別名キリシタン灯篭。竿が十字に似ているのと、上部のふくらんだ文字がローマ字に見えるところからこの名が付いたが、キリシタンとは全く関係がない。実際には、ローマ字に見えたのは梵字だと言われている。茶人古田織部が考案したデザイン。
基礎がなく、竿のまま埋め込むのが特徴で、茶人の間で人気の灯篭でした。
中台以上は四角で蓮弁等はなく、火袋は前後四角に抜き、左右は円窓と三日月窓になっています。

Oribe Lantern
Despite having no relation to Christianity, this is known as the Chrisitan Lantern. It gained its name because its pole simulates a cross and the swollen characters at the top resemble Roman letters. In fact, what appears as the supposed Roman letters are said to be Sanskrit characters. The design which has a sun and moon candle box was created by the tea master Furuta Oribe.
It has no base and is characterized by being embedded in the ground with the pole intact, which made it a popular lantern among tea masters.
The lantern is square from the middle base onwards and has no lotus petals, the fire box is squared out from the front to the back, and there are circular and crescent-shaped windows on the left and right.
