伊達冠石は、宮城県南部の大蔵山から採石される安山岩です。石目が細かく、世界屈指の圧縮強度を誇る、高級石材として知られています。鉄分を多く含むため、外側は酸化した褐色であるのに対し、内部は黒色という珍しい石材です。主に彫刻や石塔などに使用されています。二色のコントラストが美しく、唯一無二の表情を持つ伊達冠石は、多くの芸術家たちを魅了してきました。研磨することで内部の黒色が表れますが、経年により徐々に酸化することで鉄錆色へと変化していきます。水分を含みにくく、風化しにくいのも特徴です。
